Fun tournament proves popular
After a week’s postponement due to bad weather the Don Murdoch Tournament took place on Sunday 5th November in fine and warm conditions.
Twenty club members took part in the handicap tournament, with members being paired up by random selection for four rounds of doubles, with new pairings being selected after each round.
The handicappers then announced that Penny McGarry, Mark Bogle, David Stark and Sue Wesley had topped the table, and thus they contested the final. Penny and Mark prevailed in a good-humoured match played using old-style table tennis scoring.
Thanks to all the participants, and to the committee members who ran the tournament and organised the food. Thanks also to Hell Pizza, Liquorland on the Strand, and Vodafone Tennis Park, who donated the prizes.
We had a lot of fun at this tournament. One suggestion though: the handicaps need to be a lot larger to be meaningful. A zero to four point spread does not reflect the difference between the best players and the more social players.
